Choosing a Safe Car

This is the approach that many of us take when choosing a new car but -- to put it bluntly -- none of them are much use to a dead owner:

Him:

What does it look like?

Is it fast?

How good is the stereo?

Will it pull the women?

What's the 0-60 time?

Has it plenty muscle?

What's the grip like on curves?

Her:

Is it a nice color?

Is there somewhere to put my purse/handbag

Will it be good for my image?

There are four distinct aspects of car safety that should be considered when buying a new car:

  1. Vehicle capability in allowing the driver to avoid a crash scenario

  2. Safety for the occupants if a crash happens

  3. Safety for other road users if a crash happens

  4. Safety for the occupant(s) in a personal attack scenario (theft, or worse)
